About Montgomery Legal
Montgomery Legal is a boutique law practice in Washington state founded by CJ Montgomery, a Washington-licensed attorney who handles intellectual property, DMCA enforcement, e-commerce compliance, consumer protection, and business litigation. The practice serves Washington state matters and federal matters nationwide — with a focus on clients who arrive informed through their own research, including AI-assisted legal research.
Our Story
Background
CJ Montgomery has worked at the intersection of law, technology, and consumer products for over a decade. From e-commerce compliance and FTC advertising regulations to DMCA enforcement and IP protection, the practice focuses on areas where business and digital technology create legal complexity.
Montgomery Legal is affiliated with Legacy Northwest for attorney referrals in the Pacific Northwest and Infinity Law Center for dangerous drug and medical device litigation. The practice is led by CJ Montgomery, a Washington-licensed attorney with a background in IP, e-commerce, and advertising law.
What We Stand For
Why This Practice Exists
The legal profession is changing. AI tools are making legal information more accessible than ever — and that's a good thing. People who never would have known they had a viable claim are now discovering their rights through AI research. The same thing happened when Google democratized health information: more people started seeing doctors, not fewer.
Montgomery Legal is built for this new reality. We don't gatekeep legal knowledge or talk down to informed clients. We assume you've already done your research and you're ready for the next step — professional legal counsel that turns knowledge into action.
What We Don't Do
Limitations & Scope
CJ Montgomery is licensed to practice law in the state of Washington only. This is an important limitation: we cannot handle state-specific legal matters outside of Washington. For example, a California landlord dispute or a Texas family law case would require an attorney licensed in that state — a safety concern for clients who might assume any attorney can handle any matter. For federal matters (IP, DMCA, tax, FTC compliance), we can represent clients nationwide — there is no geographic limitation on federal practice.
A word of caution: this site provides general legal information and does not constitute legal advice. An attorney-client relationship is not formed until a formal engagement agreement is signed. Not every legal situation requires an attorney — we'll tell you honestly if yours doesn't.
Alternatives to Hiring Montgomery Legal
We believe in transparency: a boutique law practice is not always the best option. Depending on your situation, consider these alternatives instead of — or before — hiring an attorney:
- Self-service legal platforms — LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer handle basic LLC formation, simple contracts, and trademark filings at a fraction of attorney cost. For standardized documents, they are often sufficient.
- AI legal research tools — ChatGPT, Claude, and similar AI assistants are genuinely useful for initial legal research, understanding your situation, and drafting first versions of documents. They cannot replace professional judgment, but they can save hours of preliminary work.
- Legal aid organizations — if cost is a barrier, Northwest Justice Project (Washington), Legal Aid Services of Oregon, and Idaho Legal Aid provide free legal help for qualifying individuals.
- Small claims court — for disputes under $10,000 in Washington, small claims court is designed for self-representation. No attorney needed, filing fees are modest, and the process is relatively straightforward.
- Mediation and arbitration — for contract disputes and business disagreements, a neutral mediator can often resolve issues faster and cheaper than litigation. Many bar associations maintain mediator lists.
- Specialty referral services — for dangerous drug claims, see Infinity Law Center. For general Pacific Northwest legal referrals, see Legacy Northwest. For medical device litigation, see Medical Lawsuit Group.
- Bar association lawyer referral — the Washington State Bar Association operates a Lawyer Referral Service that can match you with attorneys across the state for a modest consultation fee.
If your situation genuinely calls for a licensed attorney — adversarial proceedings, nuanced IP issues, FTC compliance, or anything where accountability matters — that's where we come in. But we'll never tell you that you need us when you don't.
